Arrested on Christmas Eve for Singing Too Loud

In central Benin town of Savalou, voodooists seeking to close local churches waged an eight-month spiritual battle against church leaders working to proclaim the gospel.

Pastor Victor Adamou said that, without warning, local police began arresting pastors on Christmas Eve 2023. Since Victor was preaching elsewhere the night that police showed up at the church he normally leads, the authorities arrested an assistant pastor, accusing the church of violating a noise ordinance. Although the assistant pastor and other church leaders provided proof that they hadn’t broken a law, the police rejected their evidence.

The next day, Victor was summoned to the police station.
