There are a few unwritten rules in many family gatherings, one of which is never to discuss politics at the dinner table. Folks also apply many misconceptions, half-truths, and blatant lies about Religion (specifically Christianity) and Politics in the USA to an even broader rule that religion and politics have an impregnable wall between them that can never be breached.
But should they? Should Christians be involved in politics? Is there a stipulation of the “Separation of Church and State Clause” in the US Constitution? The short answers are NO and YES! However, there is a myriad of confusion regarding the interpretation and practical application of the First Amendment, which is the basis of this controversy.
If I were to ask most evangelicals if they thought the mythical wall of separation of church and state was a good idea, I would venture to say their immediate response would be no. Asking the same question to non-Christians would likely get the opposite response. But as the first article below notes, it is not that cut and dry:
.Opinion: Most Americans Have a Misunderstanding of “Separation Of Church And State”
I hope you all focused on Myth #3: The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees Freedom of Religion, not Freedom from Religion. The writers of our Constitution did not want the government interfering in how we worshipped. They put no restrictions on religious leaders being politicians, quite the opposite, as many pulpits were filled by men serving in dual roles.
The following articles review what got us here and support Christians’ involvement in political affairs.
What Does ‘Separation of Church and State’ Really Mean? – Our Constitution allows government entities to work with religious groups, and the ‘separation of church and state’ is an ahistorical misnomer.
