The following is an in-depth study of Genesis 1:26-27
When we flush out Genesis 1:26 and 27, it should be readily apparent to even the casual reader what God’s intent was here:
- First, it is the Triune God who decided to make, or better put “create” from nothing, man.
- Secondly, the same Triune God decided to create man in their own “image” and “likeness.” Note the usage of the two words with similar meanings, emphasizing the task to be accomplished. The only explanation for these words since mankind does not have the power (omnipotent) or mental (omnipotent) or ability to be ever-present (omnipresent) of God, is the image of God refers to the moral character of our soul.
- The third thing, in v.26 we see God created man to have dominion that is to rule, as God’s representative over all the earth. This is no small responsibility, man (Adam) was to act in God’s place tending to the affairs of the Graden and all that was in it.
- Finally, in v.27, we see God created man and women, male and female both in Their own image.
Ever since the fall, of Genesis 3, man has been in rebellion to God. He has slowly eroded the biblical mandate for manhood and fallen for societal unbiblical “norms.” The term “a man’s man” seems to have no place in society today. Folks would rather play violent video games, watch TV, hang out with friends, and feel entitled than do the work the Bible requires of a man. Morality is based not on the Biblical morality found in each of us, Romans 2:15, so man is without excuse, it has been twisted into what modern man demands as “moral relativism” where morality only applies from a certain point of view. In other words, there is no standard. This is nothing new, C.S. Lewis wrote of this in his work “The Abolition of Man” which I have attached with the workbook via the links below. I also encourage you to read the excellent article Weak Men are Wreaking Incalculable Damage on Culture.

PRAYER
Praying through Genesis 1:26
Heavenly Father, I stand in awe of Your grace and wisdom. Thank You for my creation, salvation, and the glories that you have prepared for me in the eternal ages to come. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray, AMEN.
Praying through Genesis 1:27
Heavenly Father, what a great Creator God You are and what a precious Saviour we have in Christ Jesus, our own perfect Man. Thank You that just as Adam was created in Your image and likeness, I too have been recreated, born again, and united with Jesus. Thank You that in Your grace, You made me a new creation in Christ, united me with Him, and seated me together with Him in the heavenly realms. To You be all praise and glory, world without end, AMEN.
Praying through Genesis 1:31
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word of truth and for giving me a clear understating of the Biblical foundation of the creation of the world, through a plain reading of Genesis. We pray for those who have been blinded to the truth by the enemy of our soul.. and pray that in Your goodness and grace, many will recognize the error of humanistic philosophies; liberal theology, and false religious systems and be convicted of sin and righteousness and judgment so that together with us they may be saved by grace through faith in Christ – to His honor and glory, AMEN.
