When I read the following devotional this morning my mind went not to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse but to the men pictured above. Notre Dame backfield of Stuhldreher, Crowley, Miller, and Layden, known as the four horsemen, was the most fabled quartet in college football history. Quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, left halfback Jim Crowley, right halfback Don Miller and fullback Elmer Layden had run rampant through Irish opponents’ defenses since coach Knute Rockne devised the lineup in 1922 during their sophomore season.
Yet today’s devotional speaks of a foursome, even more, to be feared.

The Fearsome Foursome
“For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death” (Romans 7:5).
Four key terms characterize those who are not in Christ.
