Daily Devotional – 05/29/2023- Remembrance

As you know I am a STRONG advocate for always using the Whole Counsel Of God. Recently I read some posts online that implied verses like Genesis 19:23-26, Luke 17:26-32 and Philippians 3:12-14 all point to the fact that “Christians” should never look to the Past This is a FALSE TEACHING! – Mike

“Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.”

Ronald Reagan 1967 inaugural address Governor of California
Proverbs 10:7 – “the memory of the righteous” | In His Word
This Memorial Day weekend it is a blessing to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while committing their lives to serving and protecting this country. It is also a blessing to remember those who have committed their lives to live righteously, who have set before us an example worth following as they served the Lord.

PROVERBS 10

Chapter CONTEXT from MHCC: Hitherto we have been in the porch or preface to the proverbs, here they begin. They are short but weighty sentences; most of them are distichs, two sentences in one verse, illustrating each other; but it is seldom that there is any coherence between the verses, much less any thread of discourse, and therefore in these chapters we need not attempt to reduce the contents to their proper heads, the several sentences will appear best in their own places. The scope of them all is to set before us good and evil, the blessing and the curse. Many of the proverbs in this chapter relate to the good government of the tongue, without which men’s religion is vain.

It would not be me or this ministry if we did not point out the whole counsel of God in our main text for today. Yes, v.7a speaks of God’s blessing upon those who are righteous. Yet less we forget those who refuse righteousness the verse continues, but the name of the wicked will rot.

We do not know the “Spiritual Condition” of most of those we honor the memorial day weekend. We do not honor them for that but for their selfless service to the country.

I hope you remember two things about memorial day, 2023. Just as in honoring God on the Sabbath, when we honor our MIA, KIA, 22-A-DAY, and GOLD STAR FAMILIES it is all about them and NEVER ABOUT US.

I hope every time you see a POW/MIA Decal or Hat you would be bold enough to thank the person for their sacrifice and service to our great nation.

Secondly and time you see a decal or flag with a star you will take a moment to empathize with the family.

In honor of our fallen military brothers and sisters this Memorial Day… may we never forget what was given for our freedom!

With a constant barrage of commercials and ads touting Memorial Day Weekend discounts on cars, cheap furniture and more, it’s easy for many Americans to be distracted from our understanding for the true reason we observe Memorial Day.  And while it’s nice to BBQ, enjoy a 3-day weekend and get excited about the unofficial start of summer, simply put: it’s a time to honor, to remember and to reflect!

If you do anything this weekend, please take time to reflect on the real reason we observe Memorial Day and honor all the brave men and women who paid and made the ultimate sacrifice to make the United States the land of the free and the home of the brave (land of the free because OF the brave)!

Whether it takes seeing an American Flag, a military sticker on a car, or watching our good friends Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host the National Memorial Day Concert, please take a moment to show yourself (and those around you), that you have not forgotten those men and women in military uniform who died while fighting for our great country!

Flag at Half-Staff Alert: In accordance with Flag Code section 7(m) the United States flag is to be displayed at half-staff from sunrise until noon (local time) on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2023. Attaching a black ribbon to the top of a U.S. flag is an acceptable alternative for flags that cannot be lowered to half-staff.

This weekend is what some call the “beginning of summer.” We hear about pools opening up, car and furniture sales, long weekend vacations, and BBQs. However, for those of us who have served in foreign lands on battlefields, this is Memorial Day, once known as Remembrance Day. I often correct people, immediately, when I hear them say “Happy Memorial Day.” That is hardly what this weekend, and the day, is all about. We should all “Honor Memorial Day” as we remember those who have made the last full measure of devotion to the last best hope for mankind, these United States of America.

We have a saying amongst us ol’ veterans, “All gave some, some gave all.”

So, let us “Honor Memorial Day” instead of rushing out to the community pool, local sale, or to fire up the grill. Take a moment as an American family, and visit a national cemetery, show your children and grandchildren who the real American heroes are. They did not wear a jersey, throw or catch a ball,or shoot hoops . . . no, they stood upon freedom’s rampart so that others could do so, and you had the freedom to enjoy that game.

Others have made the ultimate sacrifice so that you could be free. Remember them—today, and always. A moving tribute, written and narrated by former Navy SEAL and author Jocko Willink.

SIGN THE CARD

Today is Memorial Day — a day to commemorate the brave service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and to be there for the troops who are defending the freedoms we cherish. So before you celebrate this day with friends and family, I hope you’ll take a moment to honor the fallen and show support for our heroic men and women in uniform.

Before Memorial Day ends, will you help me show our service members how grateful we are for all they do? Sign the card now to thank our troops for the sacrifices they make to defend our freedoms.

As a patriotic military supporter, I know you understand the importance of this meaningful day, Mike. And I know you are as dedicated as all of us at the USO are to supporting the heroes of today, who are making immense sacrifices and risking their own lives every day to protect America and her allies.

That’s why, on this important day, I’m reaching out one last time to make sure you have a chance to say thank you. We set a goal to reach 100,000 signatures before this day of remembrance ends, and with your help, I know we can get there. Please, take just a moment now to show support for our heroes on Memorial Day and let them know how much you appreciate everything they do to keep us safe and free.

Thank you for being a part of this patriotic community and for everything you do to support our troops as they sacrifice so much for us.

Warmly,

Sydney Jones, USO
