Many years ago, John MacArthur, while speaking at Focus on the Family, made a statement that shocked everyone in attendance and readers for weeks afterwards. His comment (paraphrased) was, ‘America has forgotten the God of our forefathers, and as such I see no reason for Him to keep His hand of divine providence upon this nation.’ Since then, there have been many incidents in which tragedy has befallen this nation. Fires, Floods, Hurricanes, Sickness, and Shootings, and the outcomes have been the same, either a cry ‘why would a gracious God allow this’ or they sparked a renewed interest in religion. None could be considered a revival, and all ended as quickly as they began.
I am not a naysayer; I firmly believe God is sovereign and can do anything He pleases. Can a revival occur? Yes. Will a revival happen? I think I am in John MacArthur’s camp on this matter, and I have to ask: why would God bother with a nation that worships man-made idols and does not consider Him Lord?
