Daily Devotional – “IF”

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. John 15:10

AMP and RVR-1960

CONTEXT:

This verse comes one verse from the end of the parable of the Vine (Jesus) and the Branches (Disciples) John 15:1-11.

In the previous verse, v.10, Jesus declares His love for His disciples (The Apostles specifically) and then tells them to love Him steadfastly in the same manner.

Our text explains how this can be accomplished.

BREAKDOWN:

If ye – Maybe the most powerful two letter word recorded in scripture If, note Jesus did not say when you but if you are capable of…

keep my commandments, keeping His commandments (precepts, laws, teachings, instructions, etc.) Wait a minute we know that no man is actually capable of keeping the law (Man’s Inability to Keep the Moral Law) that is why we needed Christ a redeemer Savior. So what is He speaking of.

Remember earlier in v.3-5; Jesus says that those who remain in Him, love Him, follow His (precepts, laws, teachings, instructions, etc.) will bear much fruit, this is what He speaks of now.

ye shall abide in my love; Wow, how original :), Jesus says ‘If you Love me I will Love you’.

even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. – Jesus gives us the ultimate example the relationship between Father and Son. He followed the commands of the Father and in doing so demonstrated or showed His love for Him. In returned the Father declared His love for Jesus, Matthew 3:17,Matthew 17:5,Mark 1:11,Mark 9:7,Luke 3:22,Luke 9:35,2 Peter 1:17.

APPLICATION:

How often have you heard (or maybe used the excuse) ‘there are to many rules and I Don’t Want To Be Religious.’  While not explicitly implied in our text I also am convinced there is application to the “Greatest Commandments” here. Folks, it just don’t get much simpler than that.

Of course it all hinges on the two letter word “IF” there are a whole bunch of folks warming pews across the world (pre-Covid of course) who are on the wrong side of that word and one day will be standing before the LORD and here the horrible words: (ESV)  “…I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ ” Matthew 7:21-23

Where do you stand today are you an “IF” person of God?
