the work of the holy spirit in the life of the believer work of the holy spirit bible verses who is the holy spirit in the bible the work of the holy spirit in the church what is the holy spirit

Today is the last installment in our series on The Roles or Work Of the Holy Spirit. As I noted I found this list, there are many others, called 70 Functions of the Holy Spirit and while I have some reservations that some of the items on the list (could easily be taken out of proper biblical context) it can be a helpful tool. We however will only look at a few of the many roles the Holy has concentrating on those in a believers life including those as;

He ministers truth. (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13)

He teaches. (Luke 12:12; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 1 John 2:27)

He restrains. (Acts 16:6)

The Holy Spirit brings direction and guidance. (Mark 13:11; Acts 10:19; 11:12; 21:11; 1 Timothy 4:1)

The Holy Spirit invites us to walk with Him. (Romans 8:4-5)

The Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives. (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9)

He washes, sanctifies, purifies and justifies. (Romans 15;16, 1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 1:2,22)

The Holy Spirit builds us together for a house for God. (Ephesians 2:22)

The Holy Spirit gives comfort, health, and strength. (John 15:26; Acts 9:31)

In last Fridays’s part VIII of our series on the Roles or Work of the Holy Spirit we discussed building the church (body of Christ). Today we look at how The Holy Spirit gives comfort, health, and strength so let us break it down.

Comfort:

Looking back to the very first in these posts on the Holy Spirit Part I, the Promise of; we looked at John 14:16 as one of our main text: And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another [c]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever (AMP)

I chose this version because although the KJV with it’s Comforter, the ESV with it’s Helper, the CSB with it’s Counselor, and the NLT with it’s Advocate are all correct in their own right the in its original sense, it means more than a mere counselor. The Holy Spirit is shown as the word παράκλητος , of which Paraclete is a transcription, meaning our Advocate or Counsel, one who is called to another’s side to aid him in times of trouble (helper comforter).

Health:

Some folks believe and wrongly try and convince others, (Benny Hinn and his band of carnival actors as an example) that if they just have enough faith the Holy Spirit will heal them of anything. Hogwash! That is dangerous unbiblical heresy and has no place in the evangelical world.

Can God heal the blind and make the lame to walk again, of course He can or He would not be God an worth our worship. Does He have to do so just because we have “enough” faith, no. BTW, who determines what is enough faith?

The Holy Spirit is active in promoting Health and Healing in our lives daily. He does this by:

Bringing us Joy and Peace: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, (Galatians 5:22) Maybe it is just me but when I am happy and at peace I am a whole lot healthier. I feel good about myself and other. I am a better person to be around 🙂

Bringing us Hope: For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. (Galatians 5:5) and Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. (Romans 15:13). Everyone has hopes, for Christians it is the not the same as for non-believers. They hope for a better life we hope for the fulfillment of the promise to come, eternal life with our Lord and Saviour. A life free from pain, worldly cares, and troubles.

Strength:

The ways of the unregenerate, that is man without Christ as LORD and Saviour of their life, are lost and cannot benefit from the Holy Spirit; 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Just because we are believers does not mean that we cannot still do foolish things. It is one of the Holy Spirit’s many roles to help strengthen us against from doing those things Ephesians 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.

Another function of the Holy Spirit in Strengthening believers is in their role of evangelism, outreach, ministry, etc. I am not talking specific gifts here for ministry I am talking about Jesus’s promise to empower the disciples Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Also we cannot neglect the Holy Spirit’s work at Pentecost Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

CONCLUSION: Over the past 13 sessions we have studied much about the Holy Spirit. We can be assured that the promise made by Jesus of His (H.S.) coming was fulfilled and is present by and indwelling in every true born again redeemed believer. It is up to us to take advantage (in a good way) of the Holy Spirit’s presence and call up Him to minister, teach, guide, restrain, direct, walk with, produce fruit in, sanctify, comfort, heal and strengthen our lives.
