Ah, sinful nation,
A people loaded down with wickedness [with sin, with injustice, with wrongdoing],
Offspring of evildoers,
Sons who behave corruptly!
They have abandoned (rejected) the Lord,
They have despised the Holy One of Israel [provoking Him to anger],
They have turned away from Him. Is 1:4(AMP)
When I was growing up we had hero’s not idols and there is a BIG difference, not just in words but biblically as well.
A hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. My hero’s included the likes of my neighbor who was a WWII veteran, Rico Petrocelli a Short stop for the Red Sox and Gene Kelly and actor who could sing and dance with the best of them. What did all these men have in common? Upright moral character. All second generation Americans and none were outspoken anti this or that. All were true Red, White and Blue Americans.
An Idol I think Tim Keller says it quite well above “if anything, other than God becomes more more fundamental to your happiness, meaning in life and identity, then it is an idol.” Today idols are everywhere. Americans lift up (idolize) athletes making huge amounts of money who disrespect our flag, nation and president. They sit behind video games and are mesmerized by (idolizing) these to the point of caring little for the real world around them. Americans pay homage (idolize) to celebrities who spout off the latest political left leaning socialist rhetoric without any real clue to the impact. Then there is the great divide in American culture today, no I am not speaking about the color of skin, race, issue here I am speaking about politicians. We have those on the left and those on the right (with a few in the middle). Both sides seem have have folks that take for gospel (idolize) everything said by any one.
The Bible is quite clear, God will not tolerate idols. One only has to look to the Nation of Israel to understand that God who showed restraint, lovingkindness and mercy in the end had to pass righteous judgment upon the ungrateful and sinful nation of Israel.
In our text verse above Isaiah 1:4 we can see that God through the Prophet Isaiah is speaking to Israel Ah, sinful nation. Maybe it is about time America wakes up and heeds the same warning? Are we not a nation of; A people loaded down with wickedness [with sin, with injustice, with wrongdoing], think abortion, same sex marriage, idolatry, and so much more. I have said this many times, we ARE NOT, a Christian (theocracy) nation, we were however founded upon Christian (biblical) principles. One only has to read the founding fathers and founding documents to be assured of that. Yet today because of idolatry, God is saying, They have abandoned (rejected) the Lord, should we not expect the same from him?
Politics aside, President Trump has campaigned on the slogan “MAGA”, Make America Great Again”. I think this can only be accomplished if we as a nation repent and turn from our idolatrous ways.
