Daily Devotional – Close 2020 and Open 2021

INTRODUCTION

What a year 2020 has been; from COVID to Riots, to a sham election, America (and the world) has seen turmoil like never before yet there has been one constant through it all. It seems like we (yes “Christians” too), would much rather complain,  whine and even hold pity parties about it than recall the abundant Goodness of 2020.

The CROWN (עָטַר ) of the YEAR (שָׁנָה) - Part 1 - YouTube

PSALM 65

God’s Abundant Favor to Earth and Man

CONTEXT

I used this Psalm in early December in a devotional that I called Praise Jehovah, and it is a short read that I hope you will enjoy also.

To assist in understanding my theme for today the best analogy is that of farming. While many of you may not be farmers you can picture the importance of rain, weather, sun, and such to a good harvest.

Here the David is expressing thanksgiving (praise) to God for an abundant harvest. God is presented as follows:

    • God Forgives (verses 1-4)
    • God Helps (verses 5-8)
    • God Provides (verses 9-13)

It is the later specifically v.11, that today I want to concentrate on, in spite of the trouble 2020 we all enjoyed, harvest was bountiful.

BREAKDOWN

Thou crownest –  I have been crowned a few times in my past :). My mom could pack a wallop and I deserved a few. But here David is giving credit to God  for the “crowning” achievement of …

the year –  Sure 2020 has been a mess but so what did you expect a fallen world to be easy? Yet God is still sovereign still in control, think how bad it could have been if He just let chaos completely rule the day?

with thy goodness; – So much to complain about in 2020 and it seem that is all everyone wants to do they have forgotten God’s Goodness.

and thy paths – Why? Are we so overwhelmed with the B I G issues of the world, we forget to thank HIM for the everyday blessings (goodness) His providence provides?

drop fatness – Okay no one  wants to get fat, but everyone wants the befits of of this fatness, the overflowing abundance of the best of God’s Grace, Mercy and Bounty.

APPLICATION

Let all close out 2020, by with a NEW BEGINING to 2021. I am not talking a resolution but a commitment to prayer, a commitment to positive thinking a commitment to God. We can begin today by recalling all the positive things we accomplished or had done for us in 2020 and hope to do in 2021.

Sunday Sermon Series – Man’s Natural Blindness

When we appreciate grace, we show it to others! - ppt download

PSALM 94

I was reading this Psalm this morning and I thought of our nation,  how far we have fallen, how miserable we have become as a “people.” There was a time when we were a God fearing nation, that is to say for the most part folks honored the law of the land, respected others and had common curtesy  towards each other. Sadly that has, for much of the land, gone by the wayside.

After four years of massive growth (financial stability and wealth)  for all Americans, one need only look to the daily news to see riots, media bias, fraud on a scale unprecedented in history and a massive movement to rewrite our history to realize we have become a nation of senseless people.

I urge everyone to PRAY, pray for God’s Chastisement, pray for His Mercy,  Pray for America for I fear the America I new and defended proudly is doomed.

SERMON

Man’s Natural Blindness in Things of Religion

 Jonathan Edwards
 (1703-1758)

Dated February 1739/1740.

“Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear?
he that formed the eye, shall he not see? He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge,
shall not he know? The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.” —
Psalm 94:8-11

Subject: There is an extreme and brutish blindness in things of religion that naturally possesses the hearts of mankind.

Why American Exceptionalism Is Different From Other Countries’ ‘Nationalisms’

With all the “hate” for America being spewed from the likes of Antifa, the so called ‘woke folks’ and many on the far left I often wonder what keeps them from just leaving; do they need help packing?

America may have it’s issues but they care far fewer than most countries. If we could get past the past, the rhetoric of the socialists and the hype of the media maybe, just maybe we could see America for what it is, an exceptional (actually the greatest) country  to be blessed and privileged to live in.  – Mike

Why American Exceptionalism Is Different From Other Countries’ ‘Nationalisms’

Mobs are toppling statues of American heroes. America and America’s past are on trial. People are protesting and rioting over the very ideas of what America stands for.

The future of the country depends on what Americans do next.

It depends on how Americans answer some direct, but not so simple, questions: Who are we as Americans? What does it mean to be American?

The Meaning of the American Founding

To answer these questions, we have to start with the American founding. It gave America its ethos, its characteristic spirit and culture…

JOHN STONESTREET

Christians are, according to Paul, reconciled in order to become reconcilers (2 Cor. 5). Though we know the brokenness in the world and in the human heart will not be fully overcome until the day every knee bows to Christ as Lord, we also model today what that restored world will look like, even if only on a small level.

In every age and era of history, there are examples of reconciliation and restoration in the midst of brokenness, including right now.

In communities across the country, including Grand Rapids, Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia, volunteers and churches are cleaning up their communities after riots. One Christian from Atlanta described the work this way, “We feel like it’s our duty as Christ followers to not only stand up for justice but to also stand up for our city. One of the ways we get to express that is by helping to clean up and rebuilding.”…

What Our Cries for Justice Say about God, about Us, and about the World

outrage

JOHN STONESTREET WITH SHANE MORRIS

Since the horrific killing of George Floyd, the moral outrage in our nation is palpable. Moral consensus, however, is not.

While some cry out against violence by police, others cry out against violence against police. Systemic racism is either the most important problem we face, some say, or it doesn’t exist at all, others say. We must defund the police, according to some, and we must support the police, according to others.

Certainly, the debates over what exactly is wrong with this world and what must be done to fix it will continue. In the meantime, we ought not miss what the moral outrage, even when wrongly conceived or violently expressed, reveals about who we are and the kind of world we live in…

From Riots to Repentance

They were the biggest gatherings, by far, but in Washington, D.C., where one reporter said it “felt as if the entire city had emptied into downtown,” the atmosphere felt different. Calmer. Despite the steady stream of crowds outside the White House, there were some signs of summer nights from simpler times. By dusk, there were ice cream trucks and little children playing on the grass. Strollers were parked outside restaurants where families were eating under umbrellas. In some places, people held hands and danced to street musicians — a far cry from the sounds of sirens and shattered glass the weekend before…

Born-Alive Abortion Survivors: Just the Facts

On the 46th memorial of Roe v. Wade, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law the Reproductive Health Act which repealed legal protections for infants who survive abortion. The celebration of this law in New York City, followed by comments by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam which seemed to endorse infanticide has launched the question of born-alive abortion survivors into the conscience of America.

Congress and state legislatures across the country have responded to these radical positions by putting forth legislation to protect infants who survive abortion. However, Democrat politicians have blocked efforts in Congress and in state legislatures to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act…

Chinese Churches Can Reopen… If They Preach Party Doctrine

While coronavirus restrictions may be lifting for state-approved churches in China, many find themselves facing an even more dangerous situation — being told what to teach by an officially atheist authoritarian regime.

Catholic churches in the Chinese province of Zhejiang have been told by the state-affiliated Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association that Mass may resume this month provided churches preach “patriotism.” This instruction is deeply problematic. To the Chinese Communist Party, “patriotism” means pledging your loyalty to the Party, which is increasingly hostile to religion under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping…

A few days ago I also posted this article: A Statistical Breakdown On The Case Against ‘Systemic Police Racism’

In which the following can be found:

Mac Donald writes; rather, crime and suspect behavior, not race, determine most police actions. Mac Donald writes:

In 2019 police officers fatally shot 1,004 people, most of whom were armed or otherwise dangerous. African-Americans were about a quarter of those killed by cops last year (235), a ratio that has remained stable since 2015. That share of black victims is less than what the black crime rate would predict, since police shootings are a function of how often officers encounter armed and violent suspects. In 2018, the latest year for which such data have been published, African-Americans made up 53% of known homicide offenders in the U.S. and commit about 60% of robberies, though they are 13% of the population.

The police fatally shot nine unarmed blacks and 19 unarmed whites in 2019, according to a Washington Post database, down from 38 and 32, respectively, in 2015. The Post defines “unarmed” broadly to include such cases as a suspect in Newark, N.J., who had a loaded handgun in his car during a police chase. In 2018 there were 7,407 black homicide victims. Assuming a comparable number of victims last year, those nine unarmed black victims of police shootings represent 0.1% of all African-Americans killed in 2019. By contrast, a police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.

Mac Donald further highlights violence that was committed against blacks over the weekend in Chicago and notes that the reason that blacks die from homicide at a rate 8X higher than whites and Latinos combined is not because of the police, but because of crime.

OKAY COULDN’T RESIST; OPINION:

Is there Police Violence, sure, but as the stats show it is rare. It is also something we should expect as long as men and women are human and sinful creatures they can possibly succumb to the evil in their hearts. No one, not even law enforcement officers are perfect, and neither are those pointing fingers at them and surely not those acting out in a violent riotous manner.

The big difference an entire community (or groups in various cities) band together and react violently against an isolated incident of an evil cop and the media and many politicians see it as a good thing. Lets us change the scenario and what if, the cops banded together and went on a violent rampage every-time one of their own was murdered, how would the media and politicians react then. Yeah I didn’t think so!
