“Does the Bible condone slavery?”

In consideration of the recent in the news of BLM and attempts to rewrite America’s history I thought this a timely piece.

Question: “Does the Bible condone slavery?”

Answer: There is a tendency to look at slavery as something of the past. But it is estimated that there are today over 27 million people in the world who are subject to slavery: forced labor, sex trade, inheritable property, etc. As those who have been redeemed from the slavery of sin, followers of Jesus Christ should be the foremost champions of ending human slavery in the world today. The question arises, though, why does the Bible not speak out strongly against slavery? Why does the Bible, in fact, seem to support the practice of human slavery?

The Bible does not specifically condemn the practice of slavery. It gives instructions on how slaves should be treated (Deuteronomy 15:12-15; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1), but does not outlaw slavery altogether. Many see this as the Bible condoning all forms of slavery. What many fail to understand is that slavery in biblical times was very different from the slavery that was practiced in the past few centuries in many parts of the world. The slavery in the Bible was not based exclusively on race. People were not enslaved because of their nationality or the color of their skin. In Bible times, slavery was based more on economics; it was a matter of social status...

Daily Devotional – Suffered A While

1 Peter 5:10 – Kisha's Daily Devotional

1 Peter 5:10 (AMP and RVR 1960)

Some of y’all maybe old enough to remember the song Poor, Poor Pitiful Me, By Linda Ronstadt that was released back in 1977 and later covered in 2009 by Terri Clark in 1996. It is the story of a young singer who heads to Hollywood to make her fortune only to run into the manipulating men running the industry at the time. Here are the lyrics, out of this suffering and abuse somes a story that she just has to tell, in this case by way of a song.

So too, as Christians, we must be every ready to tell the stories God has given us.

First of course is the Gospel story, this is NOT our testimony it is all about GOD. One of the best summaries of the Gospels I have found is from John Piper, A Six-Point Summary of the Gospel, is easy to remember and simple to communicate.

Second as Ms. Ronstadt song portrays we need to tell our personal (testimony) story, 1 Peter 3:15.

Peter ends his 1st epistle by addressing the church body in two elements, first the elders 1 Peter 5:1-4, and then the younger or more immature believers 1 Peter 5:5-9.

To the elders he exhorts them and encourages them to be strong leaders for the flock they have been given charge of by God’s decree.

To the body of believers, he says LISTEN to your elders, obey them (as long as they are giving command that are biblical), be humble, persevere and cast your woes upon Christ.

And after you have suffered a little while,  Christians have been promised suffering. WHAT?  I am not going to list the many verses found in the NT alone but here is one example Acts 14:22 …“It is through many tribulations and hardships that we must enter the kingdom of God.”

the God of all grace, Christians have been promised God will intervene, for it is nothing but the Grace of God that will suffice to overcome trials and tribulations

who has called you He will intervene for those whom He has called, 2 Timothy 1:9 and choosen Matthew 22:14

to his eternal glory in Christ, We have been called not for earthly purposes (yet we are to accomplish things until our time ends here) but for eternal glory in Christ

will himself Eternity with GOD will be amazing, beyond our comprehension. Peter mentions four things that will happen to us in eternity.

Okay, I want to deviate (JUST A LITTLE), as we look at them and and think for a moment when we have come out of a difficult time of suffering.

restore, The King James says “perfect us” God will make us whole physically, mentally and spiritually.

confirm, or settle the union of Christ in and with us in glory

strengthen, Both our resolve and any area which we were weak will be gone as we are hence completely renewed in glory

and establish you. that is to place all our focus and being upon the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Alpha and Omega. Our only “mission” in Glory will be to glorify the King Revelation 22:1-5

We have set forth and established 3 things today:

    1. Christians will suffer on Earth
    2. Christians need to be ready to tell the Gospel Story and their own testimony
    3. God has promised Eternal Glory in Christ to all His called and chosen

I asked however to look at applying the 4 components of 1 Peter 5:10 to when we have come out of a difficult experience. Even though Peter is referring to future Glory, remember how you felt complete, confirm, strengthen, and established, fully renewed and invigorated in the Lord after coming through a rough patch? That my friends is your Poor, Poor Pitiful Me song. Your testimony, that needs to be shared when someone asks ‘what has God done for you lately.’

Daily Devotional – Small Faith

The Meaning of Mustard Seed Faith – MJL Things

Matthew 17:20 (AMP and RVR 1960)

One of the most Used and ABUSED verses in the bible is the one above. A quick google search of memes and images shows the most common to be things like:

‘You must have the faith of a mustard seed’

‘If you have faith of a mustard seed you can move mountains’

‘ Nothing is impossible if you have faith of a mustard seed’

‘Watch it I have a Mustard Seed and I am not afraid to use it’

The question is are all these biblical?  You are probably tired of saying CONTEXT, CONTEXT, CONTEXT but we need to look at the context to find out.

One of the most amazing events in history has just happened the Transfiguration of Jesus Matthew 17:1-13. As they head down the mountain they are confronted by a man whose son was demon possessed Matthew 17:14-19 and some of the disciples had failed to heal.

Two things very relevant happen Jesus immediately heals the child and the Apostles question how come others (they) had failed. Previously Jesus had given authority to the Apostles  Matthew 10:1 to cast out demons yet they fail here, why.

Jesus answers them in v.20 above basically saying ‘your faith was week and if it was stronger you could’ve moved mountains.’  Many modern preaching suggest that you can do ANYTHING if you just have enough Faith. Is that what He is really saying? A simple reading of most english translations of the bible seem to suggest this but delving deeper into the Word of God reveals much more.

When we consider any subject or in this case verse we must also look at the literary context. Do we really have mustard seeds in us no, is Jesus really (literally) the gate or door for the sheep John 10:7 of course not. Both are examples allegories to help us understand the concept of and true meaning of the content better.

Here as ALWAYS the focus is NOT on our individual or personal faith and how we execute it; but our Faith in God and how we execute what He is tasking us to do. I hope you can see the difference one the focus is on us the other on God. Only one is biblical!

He answered, Jesus responds to the APostles question and they are not going to like the answer

“Because of your little faith [your lack of trust and confidence in the power of God];  – Lack of faith (some translation read unbelief which I disagree with) NOTE the focus of our Faith is God, the power in this case to heal was granted by Jesus and it still requires God.

for I assure you and most solemnly say to you, –  Jesus declares to them in no uncertain terms

if you have [living] faith the size of a mustard seed, – If you will just focus your faith no matter it’s size. Here He uses the mustard seed as an example one of the smallest but most potent spice seed known.

you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’-  Is Jesus really telling them they can miraculously move mountains? As easy as it is for man to revert to his human nature and go it alone, the answer is; NO! Again literary context applies, He is saying your faith can do really big things if applied correctly.

and [if it is God’s will] it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. – How is or how do we apply our faith correctly? Can we do all things? If we have enough Faith can all things be possible to us as some teach? NO; That is heresy!!! Jesus is saying if it is God’s will done in with God’s cooperation you can do things you thought impossible.

Having Faith is of course Important. It is the basis of Christianity, we need to believe we are sinners, in need of redemption, that salvation is in Christ alone by Grace alone through Faith alone.

But unlike these modern day prosperity and name it claim it preachers, the bible teaches that our Faith is not our own. By that i mean it is grounded in the solid foundation, the cornerstone of the church Christ Jesus. We are not ever to set out and exercise our faith by ourselves Hebrews 12:1-2. WE CAN NOT DO IT ALONE!!! No matter your calling, your degree, or motive, we need the triune God by our side to have the kind of faith that can move mountains and accomplish all things for HIS Glory, AMEN.

What Do We Do with Critical Theory?: Racism, White Privilege, and Christianity

Today’s BreakPoint: What Do We Do with Critical Theory?: Racism, White Privilege, and Christianity

The question most central to defining a worldview, other than “Who is God?” and “What does it mean to be human?” is “What’s really wrong with the world?” It’s a tricky question, because there are a lot of things wrong with the world. The question is, what is the core problem that needs to be addressed in the world, the root cause of evil and human suffering, and what solution can be offered to fix it?

For example, we should want to see justice flourish and racism of all kinds come to an end, especially in light of our nation’s history and evidence that our African American neighbors are not treated equally before the law. But not everyone who talks about ending racism and creating justice means the same thing.

For a growing number of people, including some Christians with good motives, these goals are shorthand for an ideology that divides instead of reconciles, that sees people as either oppressed or oppressor rather than as divine image bearers created from “one blood.”…

Daily Devotional – Bless His Holy Name

There is a very popular song in evangelical churches by Matt Redman called 10,000 Reasons. While the lyrics do not actually list 10,00 reasons; it does make a good case  why we should be ever grateful and greatly bless and praise God.

Bless the Lord Oh My Soul Fancy Lazy Susan – Blonde Wood Crafts

Psalm 103:1 (AMP and RVR 1960)

Sometimes life SUCKS. Anyone who denies this is either a liar or living in fantasy land. King David understood this, he knew the highs and lows of life and through it all God was there with him.

That is why here in this Psalm David begins with a sincere statement or declaration of acknowledgement of God’s greatness. David could not help but declare God worthy to be praised after all God had done for him (we should be no different). He then follows that with a list of God’s blessings.

Bless the Lord, – Not with thought or deed of the natural man, but with that which God has renewed through Christ.

O my soul: – The very core of the matter, that which Christ died for at Calvary is now praising the eternal God.

and all that is within me, – Completely and fully without anything left behind, (Deut 6:5

bless his holy name. – The basis of Christian Faith, either God is worthy of all Flory Honor and Praise or He is not your God!

Since I just finished Posting the Series The Beatitudes by Thomas Watson I thought I would quote him here. Although it is 17th Century English the application is simple, God looks upon the soul of man and deserves our best at all times. What are you giving Him today?

O my soul. God’s eye is chiefly upon the soul: bring a hundred dishes to table, he will carve of none but this; this is the savoury meat he loves. He who is best, will be served with the best; when we give him the soul in a duty, then we give him the flower and the cream; by a holy chemistry we still out the spirits. A soul inflamed in service is the cup of “spiced wine of the juice of the pomegranate” ( Song of Solomon 8:2 ) which the spouse makes Christ to drink of. Thomas Watson.

Should We Defund the Police?

BreakPoint Daily

Today’s BreakPoint: Should We Defund the Police?

“I can’t breathe!”

The last words George Floyd said to his killers, became the chant of nationwide protests. Sometime last week a new slogan emerged: “Defund the police!” even “Abolish the police!”

At face value, the new slogan sounds absurd. Because it is.

When a CNN news anchor asked the president of the Minneapolis City Council, “What if in the middle of (the) night my home is broken into? Who do I call?” The Councilwoman’s response, that the ability to call for help in the first place was a matter of “white privilege,” was, shall we say, less than enlightening.
Abolishing police is the stuff of utopian fantasies, only possible in worlds without evildoers. Because such worlds do not exist, law enforcement of some kind, at least here on Earth, will always be necessary. To think otherwise is to misunderstand the human condition.

“The line separating good and evil,” wrote Solzhenitsyn, “passes not through states, nor classes, nor political parties.” Neither does it pass through occupations, as if policemen are intrinsically “evil,” while social workers or teachers or protesters are intrinsically “good.” The problem is in all of us, in every human heart
