PART 6 — WHAT SHOULD GOVERNMENT EXIST TO DO?
This is the sixth post and final post in a series on the purpose of government. A list the previous posts in this series appears at the end.
Here we conclude the series…
CONTINUED @ LINK ABOVE
- In Part 1 of this series, we introduced the topic. What should the government exist to do? In Part 1, we identified the major issues and pointed out that the founders of the United States did something very unusual. They involved the public, the citizens of the thirteen colonies, in a debate over the purpose of government. The Declaration of Independence became the first product of that debate.
- In Part 2 of this series, we examine the moral issues. What does the government do that justifies taxing people and throwing them in jail if they disobey the laws promulgated and enforced by the government?
- In Part 3 of this series, we considered the practical issues. What does government do better than private companies or nonprofit organizations? What problems must government solve simply because there is no other practical alternative?
- In Part 4 of this series, we considered the organizational issues. The primary organizational issue addresses this question: How do We the People enable the government to control the governed; and the next place, oblige it to control itself? See JAMES MADISON’S DILEMMA — PART 1.
- In Part 5 of this series, we reviewed the religious issues. The point of this post is to drive home the idea that we derive our laws from our religious beliefs.
The link below is to a series I posted a few years ago on Christians and Civil Government. There are 11 posts in that series, excluding the first post that appears at the link.
