COMMENT
FATHER’S DAY has become, for the most part, just another day of commercialism. A day to celebrate dads by spending money on them. In the section below (history), you will note this was far from the original intent. It saddens me to see the role of fatherhood diminished and neglected so fiercely by our educational institutions and mainstream media.
Fathers are not to be like those seen in movies and sitcoms. These would have you believe that men in general, and Fathers specifically, were weak, babbling fools, while the wife was the real strength in the family. Unfortunately, much of America has bought into these lies over the past 2 decades, and we see the horrific results. In 2023, nearly one in four children in America aged 0‒17 years, totaling about 19 million, were living in a household without their biological, step, or adoptive father, mostly with their mother (85% of cases). 1 Single-parent, fatherless households have become a plague upon the landscape. God’s design for fathers is clearly defined; we are to be Spiritual Leaders, Providers, Protectors, Instructors, disciplinarians, teachers, and role models. We are to do this with Love and Compassion so that we can leave a heritage and legacy honoring God. 2
One of my greatest regrets in life is that I came to saving Grace (and joy) after my children were grown with children of their own. I can look back now at all the foolish attempts I made to be a “good” father, and how woefully short I fell.
Today’s two sermons explain the Role of a Christian Father and the part that Christian parents play in nurturing their children.
HISTORY
The Forgotten History of Father’s Day
While many other countries also celebrate the holiday on the third Sunday of June, some mark the observance at other times of the year. Notably, a number of Catholic countries celebrate it on March 19, the feast day of St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus.3
