Today is not about the veterans you meet.
Today is a Day of Remembrance for the thousands of our Brothers and Sisters who died in service to our nation.
CONTEXT:
PSALM 77: title–v.20 In this individual lament psalm, the psalmist describes the comfort he has found by remembering how God helped the Israelites. The psalmist begins by depicting his anguish and pleading to God (vv. 1–3). He then describes his sleepless turmoil (v. 4) and his efforts to find some insight and resolution to his struggle (vv. 5–6). He describes a time in the past when he struggled, recalling the questions he asked regarding God’s inaction (vv. 7–9). The psalmist then recalls how he focused on God’s past actions on behalf of Israel (vv. 10–12). He considers God’s character and shifts from an individual perspective to a corporate (group) viewpoint as he recalls God’s actions (v. 13). He then describes God’s actions across history (vv. 14–15) developing imagery about God’s power (vv. 16–19). The psalmist concludes by focusing on the events during the time of the exodus (v. 20)
John D. Barry et al., Faithlife Study Bible (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012, 2016), Ps 77:title–20.
Verse 5: I have recounted the days of old. There is no doubt that he endeavoured to assuage his grief by the remembrance of his former joy; but he informs us that relief was not so easily nor so speedily obtained. By the days of old, and the years of ancient times, he seems not only to refer to the brief course of his own life, but to comprehend many ages. The people of God, in their afflictions, ought, undoubtedly, to set before their eyes, and to call to their remembrance, not only the Divine blessings which they have individually experienced, but also all the blessings which God in every age has bestowed upon his Church. It may, however, be easily gathered from the text, that when the prophet reckoned up in his own mind the mercies which God had bestowed in time past, he began with his own experience.

This Memorial Day, let’s remember the many men and women who have given their lives to protect our great nation.
They gave their lives for the hope that in the United States of America, every person’s fundamental rights to free speech and religious freedom would be recognized—and respected.
They understood what happens in countries where the freedom to live and speak according to the truth has been dismantled. And because of this, they were willing to put much on the line for all of us. They spent time away from their homes and families, often endured great hardship, and even sacrificed their lives so that every one of us could take hold of that priceless freedom.
Yet many of us too easily forget just how precious and hard-won the freedom we possess is.
This Memorial Day, let’s not only remember the heroes who sacrificed much for our country—let’s pay them the honor they’re due by cherishing the freedom we’ve been given.
P.S. Today, let’s honor our heroes by praying for the preservation of life, religious freedom, free speech, parental rights, and marriage and family. These are the building blocks of our nation—and the blessings many fallen men and women have passed on to us to protect.
