CONTEXT
TITLE. A Psalm or Song for the Sabbath day. This admirable composition is both a Psalm and a Song, full of equal measures of solemnity and joy; and it was intended to be sung upon the day of rest. The subject is the praise of God; praise is Sabbatic work, the joyful occupation of resting hearts. Since a true Sabbath can only be found in God, it is wise to meditate upon him on the Sabbath day. The style is worthy of the theme and of the day, its inspiration is from the “fount of every blessing”; David spake as the Spirit gave him utterance. In the church of Christ, at this hour, no Psalm is more frequently sung upon the Lord’s day than the present. The delightful version of Dr. Watts is familiar to us all—
“Sweet is the work, my God, my King,
To praise thy name, give thanks, and sing;
To shew thy love by morning light,
And talk of all thy truth at night.”The Sabbath was set apart for adoring the Lord in his finished work of creation, hence the suitableness of this Psalm; Christians may take even a higher flight, for they celebrate complete redemption. No one acquainted with David’s style will hesitate to ascribe to him the authorship of this divine hymn; the ravings of the Rabbis who speak of its being composed by Adam, only need to be mentioned to be dismissed. Adam in Paradise had neither harps to play upon, nor wicked men to contend with.

SERMON DESCRIPTION
Humanity living life before God is the theme of Psalm 92 and the Bible as a whole. In this sermon on Psalm 92:1–15 titled “Godly or Ungodly,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones takes the opportunity to walk through the psalm and observe the life of people before God’s presence. What are the two types of people in this world? Listen to hear the only distinction that truly includes all people in one of two categories—the godly and the godless. The listener is encouraged to stop thinking about themselves and start thinking about the God who made them. Don’t be fooled; God’s wrath is coming and all need to be prepared. “Those planted in the house of the Lord will flourish in His courts.” Christians can rejoice in the Lord always because His promises are always true. There is a strength and joy that is found in the believer. Despite the droughts of life that come, the believer is kept and preserved in the Lord. Flourish by listening to the teaching of Scripture and learn to understand life in terms of God.
SERMON BREAKDOWN
- There are two types of people in the world: the godly and the ungodly.
- The godly praise and thank God, the ungodly do not.
- The ungodly are like brute beasts, ignorant and foolish. They live wicked lives and will be destroyed.
- The ungodly think they are successful like springing grass but will perish. They do not understand God’s ways or judgment.
- The godly understand themselves, God, life, and God’s plans. They praise God for who He is, His works, mercy, and purposes.
- God allowed evil and the ungodly to flourish for a time but will judge them. The godly understand this.
- God strengthens and preserves the godly like palm trees and cedars. They are useful and fruitful even in old age.
- The godly stand on the rock of God’s righteousness. They are planted in God’s house and flourish.
- To be planted in God’s house means believing and receiving the truth. It means being in Christ.
