Today I am deviating from my usual, context, context, context simply because as I am getting older, I realize the following is fast becoming true for me as it was for King David.
Now King David was old and advanced in years. And although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm.
1 Kings 1:1 (ESV)
As we get older our bodies get weaker but if you have been a faithful “Christian” your minds should have been getting Spiritually stronger. That Spiritual growth only comes from being a student of God’s Word.
Why study God’s Word:
- The Bible (Jesus speaking) in Mathew 4:4, says a man can not live by food alone, he needs to Word of God to survive.
- The very word we translate as “Disciple” comes from the Greek word mathetes, meaning “disciple, student, follower. If you call yourself a “Christian you are a disciple of Christ.
- Psalm 119:65-66, although modern society claims that judging others is wrong, the truth is done with Spiritual Discernment it is Biblically Righteous. This only comes from God and the study of His Holy Precepts.
- All True Christians are ambassadors for Christ (Great Commission) and as such must be equipt for the work 2 Tim 2:15, 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Bible is full of admonishments to be on guard for Spiritual Alertness:
Like King David, as we age we are not able to do the physical “work” we once could. That does not mean we can not or should not contribute to our church and community with (hopefully) the vast Spiritual knowledge and wisdom we have accumulated as faithful stewards of God’s Word.
