In the same way, you husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way [with great gentleness and tact, and with an intelligent regard for the marriage relationship], as with [a]someone physically weaker, since she is a woman. Show her honor and respect as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered or ineffective. (AMP)

Vosotros, maridos, igualmente, vivid con ellas sabiamente, dando honor a la mujer como a vaso más frágil, y como a coherederas de la gracia de la vida, para que vuestras oraciones no tengan estorbo. (RVR 1960)

Today is a great day, my wife is finally coming home from a near two month stay taking care of her mom in Puerto Rico. I chose this (or maybe better put, Goad planned it) when it popped up as one of my daily bible verses. It seemed appropriate and we (I) can use a refresher now and again.

Context: The Apostle Peter ends chapter 2 (1 Peter 2:13-25) explaining how we as believers have an obligation to be in submission to righteous authority. This applies to all types of authority; government, school, police, etc. He then shifts the theme to marriages wives (1 Peter 3:1-6) are to be subject to their husbands as head of the household of God. This part has been the subject of much “argument and controversy” in the more liberal church as of late. Let me state the bible makes it clear That even if the wife is a believer and the husband is not, she is to be subject ( 1 Corinthians 7) to their unbelieving husbands. That brings us to our text for today so let’s break it down:

In the same way, you husbands: Have you ever heard the old expression what is good for the goose is good for the gander? In the same way, just as a women is to do things ascribed above, you husbands are to;

live with your wives in an understanding way [with great gentleness and tact, and with an intelligent regard for the marriage relationship]: Fulfilling all the duties of a husband in a manner that shows the love you have for your wife and the high regard you hold for the marriage bond. Remembering that a Godly wife is a gift from God, and should be cherished as such.

as with [a]someone physically weaker, since she is a woman: This is not to insult a women’s capability but to remind husbands of our duty to protect and oversee the household.

Show her honor and respect as a fellow heir of the grace of life: At the time of Peter’s writing this would have been an almost unheard of concept. Women were just not considered equals with men in any respect, here he says they are equal in the kingdom of God and must be treated as such.

so that your prayers will not be hindered or ineffective: As if we, husbands, need an incentive or reason to honor, respect, love, protect, cherish our wives Peter makes sure we get the point. If we do not ‘our prayers will be hindered or ineffective.’ He is saying in effect that not being a Godly husband is a sin.

In closing here is Paul’s parallel verses on the subject Ephesians 5:28-33 (ESV)

In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
