Offering Hope in Reentry

The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3 million people in 1,833state prisons, 110federal prisons, 1,772 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,134 local jails, 218immigration detention facilities, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in the U.S. territories. But people go to jail 10.6 million times each year. ¹

You all know I am not one who is a lenient forgive and forget kind of person when it comes to criminal justice.  Yet our current system seems to be geared towards a never-ending cycle of recidivism. There are expectations, mainly through the work of faith-based groups like Prison fellowship. Here is one story.

INSPIRING HOPE THROUGH TRANSFORMATION

Hope

Kathy Vosburg’s first time inside a prison was at a Prison Fellowship Academy® graduation in October 2006. While visiting the original Academy at the Carol S. Vance Unit, one man told her, “We have never, ever known in our entire lives the unconditional love like these mentors and these volunteers show us while we’re here at the Vance Unit.”

That memory stuck.

Today, Vosburg is the founder of CrossWalk Center in Houston, Texas. A local, faith-based parachurch organization founded in 2016, Crosswalk offers safe, sober transitional housing, reentry and spiritual counseling, and living-wage employment placement services.

In late 2019, Prison Fellowship began a formal partnership with CrossWalk Center

‘Live Together as Brothers — or Perish as Fools’

He only flew to Seattle once. It was early November of 1961 — two years before the young civil rights leader would give one of the most famous speeches in history. At just 32, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. hadn’t won his Nobel prize or written his letter from a Birmingham jail, but word of the influential pastor had spread. Out west, thousands of miles away from the powder keg of boycotts and unrest, things may have been calmer, but plenty of people were still hostile to King’s message. They thought it was too radical, too revolutionary. So, they did what the forces of bitter intolerance have perfected today: they canceled him…

Jefferson Opposed Censorship of Opinions

Yesterday, January 16, 2021, was Religious Freedom Day here in America. Something almost completely ignored by the media.

American Minute with Bill Federer

Jefferson Opposed Censorship of Opinions: Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom & How Courts have taken Freedom away!

On … we commemorate the … anniversary of the passing of a State law that has shaped and secured our cherished legacy of religious liberty.” – proclaimed President Donald J. Trump, January 16, 2018.

President Trump continued:
“Our forefathers, seeking refuge from religious persecution, believed in the eternal truth that freedom is not a gift from the government, but a sacred right from Almighty God. On the coattails of the American Revolution, on January 16, 1786, the Virginia General Assembly passed the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom … This seminal bill, penned by Thomas Jefferson, states that, ‘all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.'”

“There are some principles worth fighting for & worth dying for”

American Minute with Bill Federer

I am one of those who believe there are some principles worth fighting for & worth dying for” -U.S. Senate Chaplain Peter Marshall

The morning of December 7, 1941, Rev. Peter Marshall addressed the midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, class of ’42.

At the last minute, he set aside his prepared remarks and preach a prophetic message, “Go Down, Death.”

Within an hour after he finished, news of Imperial Japan’s attack at Pearl Harbor spread across the nation.

Peter Marshall stated:

“I am one of those who believe that there are some principles worth fighting for and worth dying for if need be.”

Today: Wednesday 13 January 2021

An evangelical missionary from Switzerland was murdered in Mali by Islamic militants in September 2020. Beatrice Stöckli (59) had been kidnapped and held captive for over four years by a group called Jammat Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM). Three other European hostages and a Malian politician were released by JNIM about a month later, reportedly in exchange for over 100 jihadists who had been captured by the Malian authorities. Beatrice had had an earlier experience of kidnapping in 2012 when she was held for nine days and tortured. On her release, the terrorists warned her not to come back to Mali. Despite this, she decided that she would return to her ministry in Timbuktu. Pray that her many years of work in Mali will bear much fruit in this country where Christians are about 2% of the population.
