I have passed by this church many times. One of the things I love about this building is that no one can mistake it for a strip mall (referring here to newly constructed facilities) or a self-storage facility. It boldly proclaims we are a church.
Last week, we looked at Christians and Politics. Should “Christians” engage in politics, and if so, how? One thing I neglected to emphasize was God’s sovereignty in all those actions. Nothing happens, good, bad, or indifferent, as the saying goes, without God’s authority.
Considering the recent and ongoing actions of the US and Israel military forces as a prime example. I am not here to argue the merits of the action, just God’s involvement, if you will. First, did the actions against Iran happen apart from God’s Will? NO! Should we hope for and pray for peace? YES! Lastly, we must all acknowledge that God is in full control of all things:
Sovereignty of God. God’s authority and power to accomplish his will as the supreme Ruler of all things. God expresses his sovereignty through his *decrees and actions, which are planned in complete independence from anything outside himself and enacted throughout *redemptive history. The Reformed tradition recognizes God’s sovereignty over all creation, and particularly in his acts of *predestination, *effectual calling, *justification, and *glorification of his people. This sovereignty is linked paradoxically and inseparably with human responsibility in a way that resists merely mechanical determinism, although Reformed theologians differ on the nature of human *free will. God’s sovereignty serves as a source of great comfort to Christians, whose hope rests in a God who controls all things for the good of his people and creation.

When change makes the world feel dark and chaotic, it can seem as if evil has the upper hand. What does the Bible teach about God’s sovereignty and goodness amid turmoil?

Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.” (Dan. 2:20-22)
There is so much we wish we could change in this wicked world, but who is really in charge of change and has the wisdom and holiness to make change end in ultimate good? When the world is dark and chaotic, and evil is manifested, we must remember both the One who can change things and his character, finding our comfort and hope in him.
There is nothing that surprises God.
This passage from the book of Daniel above reminds us that our mighty God knows…
