COMMENT and CONTEXT
When we think of indictments, we think about the law, grand juries, and criminals. Rarely does a day go by when some local, state, or federal authority is not indicting someone or being indicted themselves.
It is rare for most folks to think of having their own indictment out there somewhere. Yet that is precisely what the Apostle Paul says in Romans 3:23. Consider this moment: Why did God give man the Law? One reason was certainly to reveal man’s sinfulness. Another reason is to show that man wholly depends on God for a moral compass (John 3:19).
It is important to note that just like our judicial system is supposed to work here in the USA (innocent until proven guilty), God’s indictment does the same. We all will have the opportunity to stand before God and plead our case. Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:10 states that no one will escape this judgment. The only question will be whether you are among those persuaded beforehand.
