It continues to amaze how many “Christians” believe their mission in personal evangelism is to save souls. Really, I thought that was the job of the Triune God?
We are called (everyone) in the Great Commission) to go out and teach (KJV) or make disciples, as most modern translations of Matthew 28:18-20 have it. I think the Amplified Bible does a good job of expressing this:
18 Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority (all power of absolute rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.”
Some observations on this text:
- Evangelism is done ONLY under the authority of Christ Jesus.
- Making Disciples involves more than easy believism; we are commanded to teach folks all of the Bible, not just the “good parts.”
- The disciples will know Jesus, believe in Him as Lord and Savior, and Obey His Commands; anything less is fraud.
- Jesus is always with all true Christians in their evangelistic efforts.
We are the instrument God uses to share the Bible, the Gospel truth, and it is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict them unto repentance, John 16:9-11.
