This chapter has has one theme, the old and new covenants, with two major divisions, v.1-10 the old and v.11-28 the new. Matthew Henry further refines them as The Jewish tabernacle and its utensils. (1-5) Their use and meaning. (6-10) These fulfilled in Christ. (11-22) The necessity, superior dignity, and power of his priesthood and sacrifice. (23-28)
Our text for today also has two major divisions and falls within the New Covenant. First it is a firm reminder that Christ’s sacrifice at calvary was a one and done deal. He bore the sins of all His redeemed and once we are truly saved (with Christ as the LORD and Savior of our lives) there is no need for further works of salvation.
Unlike the animal sacrifices in the Old Covenant, which only temporarily hid the sins of god’s people Christ’s pure and unblemished blood washed clean our sins forever.
The second part of this verse is just as important for it follows the theme of the first in that the promise of Christ’s return, Glory Hallelujah, will not result in a judgment of condemnation to His redeemed. All persons will be judged 2 Corinthians 5:10 makes that clear, but true children of God will be judged for their works for the king(dom) and not the eternity of their souls.
Where is your soul spending eternity?
Pray for a Sense of Assurance
O let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that sin has broken rejoice. Psalm 51:8(ESV)
Say to each of your children, “Take heart, my son, my daughter; your sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2(ESV)
Let the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify my conscience from dead works to serve you, the living God. Hebrews 9:14(ESV)
Let your Spirit witness with my spirit that I am a child of God, and if a child, then an heir – an heir of God and a fellow heir with Christ. Romans 8:16-17(ESV)
Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.” Psalm 35:3(ESV)
Thank God for the Assurance you have of Christ’s Second Coming
I bless you that you have fixed a day on which you will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom you have appointed; and of this you have given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. Acts 17:31(ESV)
That in that day the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of the Lord Jesus: 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8(ESV) And he will come to be glorified in his saints and to be marveled at among all who have believed; 2 Thessalonians 1:10(ESV) for, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:14(ESV)
That he shall then send his angels to gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, Matthew 13:41(ESV) and to gather his elect from the four winds; Matthew 24:31(ESV) and then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Matthew 13:43(ESV)
And I then, according to your promise, am waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells: Lord, grant that, since I am waiting for these, I may be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace; 2 Peter 3:13-14(ESV) and then Come Lord Jesus! Come soon! Revelation 22:20(ESV)
