Luke 23:46, “Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.”
Today we look at the SIXTH thing Jesus said on the cross; “It is finished!”
The first question I had to ask myself was what was it that was finished? Many commentaries imply that Jesus is saying His life is expiring so He is finished, but does He say “I am finished?” No He say “It” so He has to be speaking of something else something impersonal.
Jesus came for a purpose (John 3:16) and as we saw in our devotional Jesus Said “I AM” Part VI that included being obedient to the Father and fulfilling all of scripture. So what Jesus is saying in His declaration of “It is finished” is far more than simply I have had enough, my body is spent I am ready to die. He is BOLDLY declaring that He has accomplished all that was
Required of Him: Becoming a lowly human in order to save humanity (Philippians 2:6-7)
All that is Necessary of Him: To fulfill the Law (Matthew 5:17-18) to suffer (Isaiah 52:13–53:12) and to leave for us an example to follow.
All that was prophesied of Him: From before the fall God knew and had a plan (Gen 3:15, Isaiah 7:14 Psalm 16:8-11) and that is just a few.
to reconcile man to God (Up until this point, we can not discount or minimize the resurrection).
