Our quotes today express the vast differences between man’s view and the Biblical view of Pride.
Vain-glory, self-delight and pride
William S. Plumer, “Vital Godliness: A Treatise
In practical piety, there is no greater mistake
than the persuasion that if we are pleased with
ourselves–that God is also pleased with us.
Vain-glory, self-delight and pride—
blind, bewilder, and intoxicate!
On the other hand–shame for our own vileness,
sorrow for our shortcomings, self-loathing for
undeniable turpitude of our soul–are profitable.
Men must either part with their pride and good
opinion of themselves–or they must part with
the hope of a blessed eternity. You must either
take your place in the dust before God–or be
cast down to hell.
“What a wretched man I am!” Romans 7:24
“I abhor myself!” Job 42:6
“Behold, I am vile!” Job 40:4
“Woe is me! For I am undone!” Isaiah 6:5
on Experimental and Practical Piety” 18641

PRIDE. The emphasis placed on pride, and its converse humility, is a distinctive feature of biblical religion, unparalleled in other religious or ethical systems. Rebellious pride, which refuses to depend on God and be subject to him, but attributes to self the honour due to him, figures as the very root and essence of sin

Threats to Humility: Riches and Wealth
“Walk . . . with all humility” (Ephesians 4-1-2).
Our possessions and positions in life are from God; we can’t take credit for them.

WILLIAM S. PLUMER is a favorite author of mine. His classic work TRUTHS FOR THE PEOPLE: OR, SEVERAL POINTS IN THEOLOGY (Modern prints have it titled, Theology for the People or Biblical Doctrine Plainly Stated) is an excellent read, especially for new converts.
