It is funny to me how many churches that abhor doctrine take Psalm 95:1 and make it a doctrine unto itself. First, let me be clear I firmly believe in congregational singing. Nothing in my mind makes a more joyful noise unto the Lord than a group of his saints proclaiming their love for him in righteous song. There is the twist, I think, many evangelical churches today play a litany of tunes heard on K-Love radio daily. While these are catchy tunes, one could even say uplifting, almost all could not be called “righteous tunes.” By that I mean they are not solidly grounded in scripture. You can not point to a specific verse and make a comparison.
So does that even matter? Pslam 95:2 seems to imply so, as the Holy Spirit has instructed its writer to pen “and make a joyful noise unto Him with Psalms.“ Does that mean every song sung must be a Psalm, I think not. What I am convinced it means is every song sung in Worship to the Almighty God of Heaven and Earth must follow the pattern of a Psalm and express righteous Glory, Honor, and Praise to God and God alone. It is all about Him and not about us.
