19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness [b]for holiness. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. (NKJV)
(RVR 1960)

Yesterday Paul thank God for being set free from the bondage of being a slave to sin and freely becoming slaves to the conformity of God’s will and purpose for our life. Today we look at the next two verses in our series:

v.19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your  members as slaves of righteousness [b]for holiness.

Slavery is a very contentious word in today’s society, with some demanding reparations for the sins of those long dead and gone. In fact those that have had no affect upon the very people making the demands. That is why Paul says; I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Remember Paul has just said we are slaves to righteousness but with our sin nature still intact we have a tendency to twist even the simplest things and could never fully understand what it means to be under the authority of God’s sovereign righteousness. Spiritual immaturity often leads to unrighteous acts and Paul is warning against this.

He goes on to say; just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness…so now present your  members as slaves of righteousness. If I had to put this as simply as I could I would say remember all the effort you put into sinning? Make that same effort (or more) to live righteously for Christ. Why; for holiness, or as the AMP Bible puts it; leading to [a]sanctification [that is, being set apart for God’s purpose]

When we were slaves to sin we did so compulsively, as slaves to righteousness we do so willingly.

v.20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

This is a little confusing is most English translations. The NLT comes close; When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. Even that in my limited Greek knowledge seems to fall short.

Paul is pointing out the mankind has two and only two choices; Sin or Christ you will be a slave to one or the other. Some will argue that there are “good people” in the world but they are wrong. There are people who do good things but the bible is clear apart from Christ no one is “good”.  This is consistent throughout Scripture, which depicts only two eternal ends for humanity: those who are saved by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8; Revelation 22:1–5), and those who reject God and are separated from Him forever (John 12:48; Revelation 20:11–15). So Paul is saying when we were slaves to sin we rejected all righteousness. We were unable to keep from sinning and it took God and His intervening Grace to change us.

In conclusion, when we were slaves to sin we did so compulsively, as slaves to righteousness we do so willingly for His glory.
