Today there is intense pressure—particularly in academic circles—for believers to abandon the literal understanding of the Genesis account of creation, and instead adopt a view more accommodating to evolution and other scientific theories. How Christians respond to that pressure says a lot about their view of the Bible’s inerrancy, authority, and sufficiency.
In fact, what you believe about the opening verses of Genesis forms the foundation for your view of Scripture. That was the point John MacArthur made recently when we asked him about the importance of the Genesis account.
Men and women who claim to love God’s Word must not intentionally blur its meaning to accommodate worldly beliefs. There will always be theories that assault and undercut the clear teaching of Scripture. God’s people must not capitulate, but stand firm against those attacks and uphold the authority and inerrancy of Scripture.
