Your Rest

House of Jacob, should it be asked,
“Is the Spirit of the Lord impatient?
Are these the things he does?”
Don’t my words bring good
to the one who walks uprightly?
But recently my people have risen up
like an enemy:
You strip off the splendid robe
from those who are passing through confidently,
like those returning from war.
You force the women of my people
out of their comfortable homes,
and you take my blessing[d]
from their children forever.
10 Get up and leave,
for this is not your place of rest
because defilement brings destruction—
a grievous destruction! – Micah 2:7-10 (CSB)

I have many times heard (internet and live) preaching use verse 10 to urge folks to separate themselves from worldly affairs. While the concept is biblical the context is not!

Once again we have a cse of those in the pulpit afraid to preach the Whole Counsel of God. Preaching God’s condemnation and wrath is part of that whole counsel and it is the context of this passage of scripture.

Here is verse 10 we find the following:

Get up and leaveOther versions say “Arise and depart”. This command from God should have been an expected one to the nation of Israel. Their iminate invasion had been prophesied over and over due to their ongoing transgressions.

this is not your place of restlet us go back a moment to Exodus 33:14 where we find God telling the Jews in Egypt as long as He was present they would have rest. There were however conditions (Commandments) that needed to be obeyed for that rest to be maintained. We all know how poorly the Nation of Israel did at that. Canaan was supposed to be that land of rest, the home of the Ark and the temple, yet the Jews repeatedly defied God. Remember that God did not allow most all of those in the Exodus to see the Land of Rest because of their sinfulness and His wrath (Ps 95:11) could He allow that same disobedience to not have the same result?

because defilement brings destruction— a grievous destruction! God rarely leaves us wondering why. Especially in the Old Testament it is clear to see the evil ways of natural man getting in the way of the spiritual man and defiling everything God had set forth for the Nation of Israel. He warned them over and over and their arrogance, never their ignorance caused them to be swept away into captivity (Babylon) again.

Application –  Maybe I am different than everyone else but being “in” God’s rest sure sounds good to me. Today in America however we are surrounded by the same types of lawless disobedience and arrogant sinfulness that plagued Israel in 750 B.C. Is God telling us something is He sending warnings? I will leave that up to the reader to decide as I am not a prophet I do know that defilement brings destruction— a grievous destruction!

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

13 The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

14 From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

15 He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.

17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
