When reading Pastor Dever’s post, I hope you come away with the same conclusion as I did, God first in all things. Note what Pastor Mark did at the conference or better yet did not do. He did not encourage anyone to sing a particular scripture. He did not put any undue emphasis upon Mary, the mother of Jesus. He simply unpacked the meaning of Mary’s song of praise in Luke 1:39-56 and highlighted its relevance to modern worship practices and the sovereignty of God.
In my own words, he showed that we all need to understand what we are singing. What is the context of the hymn, (or any portion of scripture) and how does it build myself and others up. Finally, and most importantly does it glorify God? This is another way of asking, do you approach it (and all things) with a proper Biblical Worldview?
Dr. David Kim1 of Veritas Classical School in California had the following to say about theological depth:
By theological depth, I am referring to the following:
- Deep Personal Relationship with God
- Comprehensive understanding of the Gospel, and how the entire Scripture is fulfilled in Christ
- Training in Thinking Biblically about every subject, understanding the Lordship of Christ in every area of life
Some will read this and think we are encouraging academic scholars my answer would be a whole hearty YES! We are encouraging every believer to be a Berean, a Bible Scholar of sorts, (Acts 17:11) to be, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Mark Dever, senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., highlighted the significance of the Magnificat and how its context can serve as an instructive model for today’s churches in a message delivered at the Getty’s Sing! Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
In a Tuesday sermon, Dever unpacked the meaning of Mary’s song of praise in Luke 1:39-56 and highlighted its relevance to modern worship practices and the sovereignty of God.
