Life eternal is the supreme good, death eternal the supreme evil.
—Augustine (354-430), bishop of Hippo
Bible Truth Behind the Quote:
The wicked “will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25:46).

When I was roughly 7-8 years old my mother took me to NYC and Broadway. Confession I have been hooked on show tunes ever since. One of the most popular and successful productions ever, having spent the last 20 years on Broadway, is Wicked. A sort of retelling of Wizard of Oz from the witches’ viewpoint. Its lyrics contain:

Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? But
Because I knew you
Because I knew you
I have been changed for good
It is the last two verses I want to explore a little today. Because I knew you I have been changed for good. In the song, the object of, because I knew you, is the other witch. The lyrics suggest that they are better off for having known one another.
Is the “goodness” in folks “good enough” to forever change someone. The Bible would suggest we (humans) in our natural (unrepentant depraved state) are anything but “good.” We need Christ to change us for our Eternal Good.
Question: “Are all people born good?”
Answer: There is a common belief today that people are born “good” and most people remain basically good at heart their whole lives. According to this theory, the evil that some people exhibit is the result of environmental factors—people only turn “bad” when external forces beyond their control twist them away from their basic goodness. This is a false, unbiblical view of human nature.

What does the Bible say about good versus evil?
Among the most universal beliefs across all humanity is the concept of “good versus evil.” Every culture in every era has held to some version of this struggle. The definitions of the terms good and evil vary wildly, as do opinions on how they interact. Still, belief in some difference between that which is “good” and that which is “evil” pervades all of mankind. When all options and ideas are compared, only the Bible provides a perspective on good and evil that is fully coherent and fully livable (Psalm 25:6–15).
