the work of the holy spirit in the life of the believer work of the holy spirit bible verses who is the holy spirit in the bible the work of the holy spirit in the church what is the holy spirit

We continue our series on The Roles or Work Of the Holy Spirit. As I noted I found this list, there are many others, called 70 Functions of the Holy Spirit and while I have some reservations that some of the items on the list (could easily be taken out of proper biblical context) it can be a helpful tool. We however will only look at a few of the many roles the Holy has concentrating on those in a believers life including those as;

He ministers truth. (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13)

He teaches. (Luke 12:12; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 1 John 2:27)

He restrains. (Acts 16:6)

The Holy Spirit brings direction and guidance. (Mark 13:11; Acts 10:19; 11:12; 21:11; 1 Timothy 4:1)

The Holy Spirit invites us to walk with Him. (Romans 8:4-5)

The Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives. (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9)

He washes, sanctifies, purifies and justifies. (Romans 15;16, 1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 1:2,22)

The Holy Spirit builds us together for a house for God. (Ephesians 2:22)

The Holy Spirit gives comfort, health, and strength. (John 15:26; Acts 9:31)

In Part IV last Friday, of this section entitled The Holy Spirit brings direction and guidance we concluded that God never intended for “Christians” to be lone wolfs so to speak that is why He sent His Holy Spirit to give direction and guidance as we interact with others including fellow Christians. Today we will discuss taking a walk with the Holy Spirit so let’s break it down:

The Holy Spirit invites us to walk with Him.

Romans 8:4-5

in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. (ESV)
para que la justicia de la ley se cumpliese en nosotros, que no andamos conforme a la carne, sino conforme al Espíritu. Porque los que son de la carne piensan en las cosas de la carne; pero los que son del Espíritu, en las cosas del Espíritu. (RVR 1960)

v.4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, it should be obvious to all that it is impossible for man to fulfill any righteous requirement of the law on his own. When we look at v.3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, we it becomes obvious it is only via the work of Christ that could fulfill the law. We by our walk{ing}not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit on a daily basis, His imputed righteousness in us becomes evident to all and fulfilled through us.

v.5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

For those who live according to the flesh all those apart from Christ, the unregenerate, carnal man who lives for worldly things and not for God and His glory alone. set their minds on the things of the flesh, they have no choice it is their nature to do these things Galatians 5:19-21 and they delight in them.

but those who live according to the Spirit those in whom the Holy Spirit dwells those born again, regenerate believers or “True Christians” will always set their minds on the things of the Spirit. This is not to say that we do not mess up that would be saying we are perfect and that would be both unbiblical and a bold face lie. The point is the things of heaven are a priority and bring us more happiness than any earthly thing ever could Psalm 4:7, 73:25

John Calvin comments, “If we would obey the Spirit, we must labor, and fight, and apply our utmost energy; and we must begin with self-denial.” Walking by the Holy Spirit is the denial of the self and one’s fleshly desires and turning to Christ to follow His example, asking the Spirit to enable us to do so. Consider today where you might be following the desires of the flesh and not the way of the Spirit. Repent and ask the Spirit to help you follow Jesus.

In conclusion God calls every believer to Walk in the Spirit, Paul here in Romans 8, goes on to say that in order to do so we must:

Romans 8:13 put to death the deeds of the flesh

Romans 8:14 be led by the Spirit if we want to be called children of God

Rom. 8:15–17 understand that relationship between us and God is as Father-Child is cemented by the Holy Spirit

Rom 8:22-25 the Holy Spirit provides the hope for eternal futures

Romans 8:26-28 the Holy Spirit helps us in prayer by interceding on our behalf
