Yesterday we began the second in our series on the Holy Spirit this section entitled The Roles or Work Of.  As I noted I found this list, there are many others, called 70 Functions of the Holy Spirit and while I have some reservations that some of the items on the list (could easily be taken out of proper biblical context) it can be a helpful tool. We however will only look at a few of the many roles the Holy has concentrating on those in a believers life including those as;

He ministers truth. (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13)

He teaches. (Luke 12:12; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 1 John 2:27)

He restrains. (Acts 16:6)

The Holy Spirit brings direction and guidance. (Mark 13:36; 13:11; Acts 10:19; 11:12; 21:11; 1 Timothy 4:1

The Holy Spirit invites us to walk with Him. (Romans 8:4-5)

The Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives. (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9)

He washes, sanctifies, purifies and justifies. (Romans 15;16, 1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 1:2,22)

The Holy Spirit builds us together for a house for God. (Ephesians 2:22)

The Holy Spirit gives comfort, health, and strength. (John 15:26; Acts 9:31)

CONTEXT: Yesterday we established the basis for our study. We acknowledged a few things that will guide the study; 1) The Holy Spirit is a Person, the third Person of the Trinity; 2) The Holy Spirit role in Salvation is critical He convicts folks of sin and without that their is no repentance unto Salvation; 3) the Holy Spirit’s primary role/work/job is to glorify the person and work of Jesus Christ it is never about us and always about Christ and Him glorified. Today we begin to look at specific roles so let us break it down;

He ministers truth.

John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13 (ESV)
John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13 (RVR 1960)

John 14:17 (NJKV) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Let us begin with the obvious, the Spirit of truth. It is the role/work/Job of the Holy Spirit to Minister Truth. He does this because He is truth. We know this because as we have already established He is the third Person of the Trinity, therefore God and God cannot lie

Think about that for a minute, forget about the lie part, what if the Holy Spirit just didn’t tell, imply or otherwise render the whole truth and nothing but the truth each and every time. Would that be someone you would be likely to count on? How about worship?

Satan is called “liar” and the “father of lies” (John 8:44), in order to counter his influence and lies, especially over the newly converted (yes you read that correctly Satan will constantly attack babes in Christ) we need someone to speak the truth. That is one of The Holy Spirits roles.

15:26 But when the [a]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

Speaking truths to battle the lies of Satan is but one aspect of the Holy Spirits role here. He is also chiefly responsible for speaking the truth about Christ: He will testify of Me.

John Calvin comments on this: “The Spirit is said to testify of Christ, because he retains and fixes our faith on him alone, that we may not seek elsewhere any part of our salvation.” Thus He testifies to the whole Gospel, the birth, life, death and resurrection of Christ Jesus.

16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

This is one verse when I first read it, it seemed like a tongue twister so let me try and break it down further:

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come confirms the promise we looked at last week that Jesus would send the Holy Spirit.

He will guide you into all truth; not universal knowledge (truths) but specific truths concerning the work and Person of Christ Jesus.

for He will not speak on His own authority, wait a minute if the Holy Spirit is Himself God, the third Person of the Trinity why is He not speaking with His own authority?  What this is really saying is The Holy Spirit will NEVER minister anything contrary to that already taught by Christ.

but whatever He hears He will speak; Just as Christ in John 15:15 the Holy Spirit is in constant communication with the Father and that is what He is speaking truths about.

and He will tell you things to come some today use these few words to think and justify a whole doctrine of “new revelations” unfortunately that just does not Standish up to any proper biblical examination.

As I have said sooooo many times before CONTEXT, CONTEXT, CONTEXT who is being spoken to here. The Apostles and Jesus is referring to the formation and establishment of the early church: John Gill’s commentary does a good job explaining: “which would come to pass after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ; things relating to the state and settlement of the Gospel church, the partition wall being broken down, the law of commandments contained in ordinances abolished, and a new face of things appearing in the kingdom and interest of Christ, in consequence of the Spirit being sent forth, and poured down: or this may respect the spirit of prophecy in the apostles, who showed to them many things to come in after ages; as the rise of the man of sin, the great departure from the faith, and decline of the power of godliness in the last days, the calling of the Jews, the destruction of antichrist, the burning of the world, and the making of new heavens and new earth; and, in short, what would be the state of the church of Christ, and religion, in all the several periods of time, quite down to the coming of Christ, when dead saints shall be raised, and living ones changed, as is declared throughout the book of Revelation.” The book of Revelation clearly states that all things are settled and done in that book, nothing new should be added or taken away yet many persist in these foolish endeavors.

In conclusion, it is certain that one of the Key Roles of the Holy Spirit is to Minister Truth. It is our job not to be an alert and ready recipient  of the truth when it comes and always be on the alert for those that would propagate falsehoods.
