Biblical Doctrine: The Lifeblood of the Christian life

Recently I had a discussion with someone who maintained that doctrine was not necessary, in fact it was ‘old fashion archaic thinking and his time was much better spent working for the kingdom.’

I hope that I am not the only one that saw the issue with that statement. How can one hope to serve the Kingdom with out having a right understanding of God’s Holy Word and how to apply it to your life? Forsaking Biblical doctrine can mean only one thing, we would rather live in the world.

Doctrine after all is in the basic sense, teaching or instruction. The word translated “doctrine” means “instruction, especially as it applies to lifestyle application”  2 Timothy 3:16.

Doctrine is very important in the bible. One can not seriously read the Bible without seeing it as an instruction manual from God as to our moral, ethical and spiritual behaviours. Yet we live in an age, as Paul predicted, 2 Timothy 3:4, when mankind would either reject sound doctrine or doctrine altogether. That is not to say one must get tied up in or argumentative over controversial biblical doctrines. Yet in most areas, the Bible is completely CLEAR and CONSISE

It should be the “DESIRE” the “GOAL” the “HOPE” of every true believer to mature in the Doctrine of God so we can fulfill the mission God has for each of us.

Today’s Prayer

Thank You, Father, for Your Holy Scriptures. Teach me, convict me, correct me and train me through the living, powerful inspired Word of truth, that I may be equipped to carry out the work that You have ordained for me to do. Keep me mindful of the dark days that face the Church in these times and may I live and work to Your praise and glory. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.

Bible Verses About Sound Doctrine

Proverbs 4:13 – Instruction

Most of us, if we are honest, hate to be told what to do. But the bible says we should “Take fast hold of” (KJV) the things God instructs us in. The question today is what are you holding on too, things of the world or God?

Retén el consejo, no lo dejes;
Guárdalo, porque eso es tu vida. (RVR 1960)

Stupid Boy?

20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. 21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand. Proverbs 19:20-21

Escucha el consejo, y recibe la corrección, Para que seas sabio en tu vejez. 21 Muchos pensamientos hay en el corazón del hombre; Mas el consejo de Jehová permanecerá. (RVR 1960)

I doubt very much that anyone get up in the morning and decides “I am going to act stupid today” yet we all seem to have days where that occurs. I remember back in 2007-2008 we were having worship team practice (okay, I am so glad I could make y’all laugh today) and somehow we got on the subject of Keith Urban’s song Stupid Boy  I made the comment that I had much practice in that subject and I could prove it by my hair loss from having hit the side of my forehead so often saying “Stupid Boy”.

While Keith Urban’s song is about a guy trying to corral a gal and crush her dreams, most of our daily misguided (Stupid) actions can be attributed to our lack of understanding of God’s intent for our daily lives. We strike out on our own, ignore the counsel, and instruction that God provides so that thou {we} mayest be wise.

Look at v.21 There are many devices in a man’s heart; the ESV puts it Many are the plans in the mind of a man. I am not telling you anything new here, man can devise the wildest and most unfruitful ideas in his own mind and heart, apart from wise counsel and instruction of God. Man will reason out anything that seems Luke 5:22 to fit their own agenda. Jesus made it clear Mark 7:20-23 man in his natural state has nothing but evil in his heart and mind. If we, those who claim to follow Christ,  fail to hold daily to the Word of God (counsel, and  instruction) we can easily slide back into that nature.

If you want to grow strong(er) in the Faith and avoid the Stupids of Life, you must be in the Word. I do not mean just a cursory review of it or listening to preaching without investigating what has been said. NEVER take my word for God’s, never take your Pastor’s or College/Seminary Professor’s. I don’t care how many books he has written or how filled with the Holy Spirit you think they are. It is your responsibility to be wise, to be a Berean because the counsel of the Lord, is unmoving and shall stand forever.

You Choose Wise Man or Fool

As a builder I have a keen understanding of the importance of a good foundation. Without it everything that we build upon it will eventually crumble and fall. So too is our Christian walk, if we do not begin with a reverence and obedience, a true piety  to the most Holy God our walk is doomed to collapse. – Mike

Matthew Poole’s English Annotations on the Holy Bible

The fear of the Lord; reverence and obedience to God, or his worship and service, as this word is commonly used.

The beginning; either the foundation, or the top, and perfection, or chief point, without which all other knowledge is vain and useless.

Foolswicked men, called fools through this whole book; such as do not fear God.

Despise wisdom and instructionare so far from attaining true wisdom, that they despise it, and all the means of getting it; which fully proves what he now said, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

The fear of the Lord — the principle of true piety (compare Proverbs 2:5Proverbs 14:26Proverbs 14:27Job 28:28Psalm 34:11Psalm 111:10Acts 9:31).

beginning — first part, foundation.

fools — the stupid and indifferent to God‘s character and government; hence the wicked.
