One of the first black preachers in America was John Marrant.Born a free black in New York in 1755, his father died when he was young. He traveled with his mother to Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. He learned how to read, play the violin and the French horn.
In 1770, as a teenager during the Great Awakening Revival,Marrant was taken to hear evangelist George Whitefield in Charleston, South Carolina, and he came to Christ. Being vocal about his new faith, he was rejected by his family…
